Story Before Command

The concept of Story Before Command, is derived from the tradition regarding the relationship between story and commands, between identity and covenant: namely, that story always precedes commands and identity always precedes covenant.

      There is an explicit connection between being in the "likeness and image" of Adam, and being a son of Adam. In the same way, humanity, is the child of Elohim

      Humanity, "Adam" is in the singular, but it is a corporate term that includes men and women, male and female. It makes it impossible to say that only men are image-bearers (for female is created in his likeness just as male). One point of interest is, it seems possible to exegete this as saying, male and female TOGETHER, and only together comprise Adam/humanity, and thus comprise the "image of God".

      The use of the hebrew, "before/to the face of Yahweh Elohenu [our God/ God of us]" (לִפְנֵ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ) The Hebrew evinces the idea that Yahweh would be present locally with Israel in the land, so that their actions would be performed BEFORE HIS FACE DIRECTLY. The first commandment is concerned with the setup of Yahweh being locally in the presence of Israel, in the land, in the tabernacle. The purpose of the commands is how to live with Yahweh locally, NOW THAT HE HAS SHOWN UP, SAVED YOU AND BROUGHT YOU NEAR.

      More simply, the purpose of commands is how to be proteges, kids, rooming with Yahweh. It's how we are to share space with Yahweh as our roomie.

Story Before Command : Notes and Sketch


Story precedes command because commands are just the particular ways (based on calling) to tell and retell the story of how you got your identity through praxis, again and again. The children of God are to pantomime the story of Daddy God bringing them into his house and family. This "pantomiming" is what it means to "bear the image" of God, or as a verb, do do the action of "imaging" God.

Imaging a Father

To "image God" is to act in lieu of God, to proxy God in his stead, or alongside him, and to act as God in the world. The task of imaging God is ultimately to do as God does. This therefore is ultimately a two-part process:

  1. Having an identity/backstory founded on having been loved, having been made a child of God, having been brought near to live in his house, having been made a part of his household/family .Because we are brought near as a child to live with God in his house, and a part of his household, we get to behold his acts, becoming acquainted and thus knowing his acts intimately,
  2. and then to reenact his acts/deeds as a contextualized household member, using the gifts he has equipped us with. We build up his house and his household this way.

Son Build Me a House: A Command

The tradition, "Son Build me a House," is in fact a command that is preceded by a story! The sentence is an imperative command that is directed by someone who is already a father to someone who is already been made a son! You find yourself in a beautiful house under-construction, part of a growing family with Yahweh as your father. How did you get here? That question always precedes what do I do now that I am here.
